SOFC Technology Development and Energy Applications
Technical development and evaluation work on solid oxide fuel cell technology, supporting an established energy technology company’s stationary power programme.
- Sectors
- Advanced Energy, Fuel Cells, Mission-Critical Power
- Disciplines
- Electrochemistry, Materials, Test Engineering
- Status
- Ongoing
Overview
The Opportunity
Stationary SOFC systems are moving into distributed and Data Centre power. Their performance, cost and lifetime are decided at the cell: in its materials, its structure and how it behaves over thousands of hours at high temperature.
This engagement involves cell-level development and evaluation work in support of our client’s programme. The technology, its intellectual property and its commercial status belong to the client.
The Challenge
Engineering Questions That Shape the Outcome
- Materials selection and compatibility at operating temperature
- Fabrication considerations that affect cell integrity
- Comparable, defensible electrochemical test results
- Durability evaluation on clearly defined metrics
- Separating cell results from stack and system performance
- Translating cell work into application requirements
Our Approach
How We Are Approaching the Work
Materials & Cell Design
Evaluation of established SOFC materials and cell configurations.
Fabrication Considerations
How processing affects microstructure and performance.
Electrochemical Characterisation
OCV, polarisation and impedance-based evaluation.
Durability Considerations
Degradation metrics and long-duration test protocols.
Applications
Where This Engineering Applies
Distributed Generation
Onsite power for commercial and industrial sites.
Data Centre Power
Prime or supplementary power for mission-critical facilities.
Industrial Energy
High-efficiency power with usable high-temperature heat.
