Battery Energy Storage for Resilient Onsite Power

Batteries store energy; generators and fuel cells produce it. In a modern microgrid, storage covers the seconds and minutes that generation cannot, and shifts energy where markets reward it.

Battery Storage in a Data Centre Microgrid: Simplified Single-Line

The battery connects to the medium-voltage bus through a bidirectional power conversion system. A microgrid controller coordinates grid import, onsite generation and storage.

Applications

What Storage Does in a Critical Power System

Load-Step & Ramp Support

Absorbing fast load changes that fuel cells and large engines cannot follow alone.

Ride-Through & Transfer

Bridging the gap while generation starts or the system transfers between sources.

Islanding & Black Start

Forming a stable local network when the grid is unavailable.

Peak Shaving

Reducing grid import peaks and demand charges, or deferring interconnection upgrades.

Energy Shifting & Firming

Storing low-cost or renewable energy for use when it is worth more.

Grid Services

Frequency and capacity services where market rules allow participation.

How We Approach Storage Studies

We are building this capability and deliver storage work with specialist partners where needed. Our contribution is the system model: how storage interacts with generation, load and redundancy.

  • Power and Energy Sizing. MW and MWh sized separately, against the duty they serve.
  • BESS Versus UPS. UPS batteries cover minutes of ride-through; a BESS is a separate asset for longer duties.
  • Chemistry Assessment. LFP for most stationary duty, with sodium-ion and flow batteries assessed where they fit.
  • Degradation and Augmentation. Capacity fade, cycling and lifetime top-up strategy.
  • Safety and Codes. Thermal runaway mitigation and applicable standards such as NFPA 855 and UL 9540A testing.
  • Controls and Protection. Grid-forming versus grid-following inverters and islanding logic.
Storage Is Not a Fuel Cell. A BESS stores and returns electrical energy; an SOFC converts fuel into electricity continuously. We treat them as complementary, separate disciplines.
